How to Clean a Tea Kettle with BKF

January 20, 2021

How to clean a tea kettle isn’t one size fits all. First, it depends on the construction material of the tea kettle, and the type of kettle. The good news is that Bar Keepers Friend can help you clean most tea kettles.

How to Clean a Tea Kettle

Stainless Steel Tea Kettles

Bar Keepers Friend CleanserSoft Cleanser, and MORE Spray+Foam all work for regularly cleaning stainless steel tea kettles, stovetop, or electric. All three products are non-abrasive and will not damage the stainless steel when used correctly.

Pro Tip: Rinse and then wipe dry with a soft cloth to prevent streaking and bring out the shine.

Copper Tea Kettles

BKF fan, Laura, sent us these awesome before and after’s of her teapot! Cleaning up after a warm cup of tea has never been so easy.

BKF is excellent on quality copper tea kettles. However, since some manufacturers mark mixed metal products as copper, it’s good to do a spot test by wetting a small area, shake a small amount of BKF on it, and use a wet sponge to wipe it off. Check closely for any discoloration, dulling, or scratches.

How to Clean Your Copper Tea Kettle

  • Wet the copper tea kettle
  • Apply Bar Keepers Friend Cookware Cleanser & PolishUse a wet sponge to evenly distribute the cleanser
  • Wait one minute
  • Gently scrub the surface of the kettle with the wet sponge
  • Rinse the item thoroughly.
  • Repeat as needed

Aluminum Tea Kettles

Although you can use original BKF Powder, I like to use the Cookware Cleanser & Polish. My aluminum stovetop tea kettle stays on the back burner of my stove. I should probably find a place to store it, but it’s convenient to have it ready and waiting. However, since it’s on the stove, the kettle often gets splattered with some of what I’m cooking.

For example, when I fry bacon and eggs, some grease makes it to the tea kettle despite using a lid. So, here’s why I like Bar Keepers Friend Cookware Cleanser & Polish; it has 50% more grease-cutting detergents than any of the other BKF cleansers.

Pro Tip: Do not put aluminum kettles (or pots, pans, and baking sheets) in the dishwasher because this will eventually discolor and dull the finish.

Glass or Ceramic Tea Kettles

BKF recommends the Cookware Cleanser & Polish on your glass or ceramic teapot. Here’s how to use it.

  • Shake the product for 10 – 15 seconds
  • Wet the surface
  • You can squeeze product directly on the wet surface or on a damp sponge to apply
  • Gently Rub the tea kettle with a soft sponge
  • Let it sit for one minute before rising
  • Wipe the tea kettle dry

Some less expensive electric tea kettles are plastic or a combination of metal and plastic. Although some people have successfully used our products on plastic we do not recommend it. If you are considering using BKF on plastic, do a spot test first.

How do you clean the inside of your electric tea kettle?

When we don’t use the stovetop tea kettle at home, we use our Keurig for a quick cup of tea. Our cup rack always has green tea and chamomile. My wife swears by Bar Keepers Friend Descaler to keep the Keurig pristine.

Here’s a video from CleanThatUp showing how to descale a glass electric tea kettle.
